Following the blackout on 28 April, in order to improve security, combined cycle power plants have substantially increased their contribution to the national energy mix. Specifically, in May they generated 68% more electricity than in the same month in 2024.
Since the failure of the general grid, the Spanish electricity system has relied more on gas to operate with greater security and diversification. Power plants of this type covered 15.7% of generation throughout May, with a total of 3,246 gigawatt hours (GWh), behind photovoltaic (23.5%), hydroelectric (17.3%) and wind power (16.7%).
