The liquefied natural gas terminal in Galicia was, together with that of the Basque Country, the most utilized in the Spanish system from January to June 2025, thus consolidating its pre-eminent place among those with the highest efficiency. With peaks of 100% on most days, the Mugardos plant was used during that period of time at 63% of its maximum capacity on average, compared to 67% at the Bilbao plant, 32% at the Sagunto plant, 28% at the Huelva plant, 22% at the Cartagena plant and 17% at the Barcelona plant.
In regasification, the terminal achieved its second best first half of the year, with 13,182 GWh of energy released to the grid, 8.3 % more than in the same period of the previous year. The record is behind that recorded in 2023 (15,346) and ahead of 2021 (12,737), 2024 (12,175), 2022 (10,891), 2008 (9,377), 2020 (8,643) and all the others since the terminal was commissioned in 2007.
“The demand for natural gas for electricity generation in Spain has increased after the blackout of April 28 and the subsequent implementation of measures to strengthen the electricity system, including an increase in activity in combined cycle plants. Although it is not possible to draw categorical conclusions when the time elapsed is still so short, in our case we can affirm that this circumstance has not been a turning point, but rather the confirmation or accentuation of what had already been a good year. Regasification in Mugardos in the four weeks prior to the incident, for example, had increased by 27%,” explains the head of our plant, Nuria Rivas.
“We continue to contribute – adds Rivas – to the sustainable development of Galicia, to the competitiveness of its industries and households, and to the decarbonization of its economy as a back-up for renewables and as substitutes for sources with lower environmental insertion. We are playing a key role in guaranteeing the security of supply in Spain and Europe within the framework of the energy transition”.
