“Natural gas guarantees energy supply when it is most needed”

‘At times of maximum criticality, natural gas remains a reliable, flexible and secure energy source, guaranteeing energy supply when it is most needed. The energy transition is built on security of supply.’ This is how Nuria Rivas, head of our LNG terminal in Mugardos, explains it in Diario de Ferrol.

Rivas also points out that demand for natural gas for electricity generation in Spain has increased following the blackout on 28 April and the subsequent implementation of measures to strengthen the electricity system, including an increase in combined cycle activity, although she adds: ‘In our case, we can say that this circumstance has not been a turning point, but rather the confirmation or accentuation of what was already shaping up to be a good year.’

‘We continue to contribute,’ he concludes, “to the sustainable development of Galicia, to the competitiveness of its industries and households, and to the decarbonisation of its economy by supporting renewables and replacing sources with lower environmental integration. We are playing a key role in ensuring security of supply in Spain and Europe in the context of the energy transition.

Diario de Ferrol also takes stock of the first half of 2025 at the Mugardos plant, highlighting that it has consolidated its position, together with the Bilbao plant, as the most used in Spain. With the exception of 2023, it has been the best first half in the history of the facility since it began operating in 2007.
